The University of
California, San Francisco National Center of Excellence in Women's Health and the
California Women's Mental Health Policy Council will co-sponsor a weekend program for
adolescent girls and their families on Saturday, June 1. The movie "Coming of
Age...At High Risk" will be shown from 4 - 6 pm in UCSF's Cole Hall, 513 Parnassus
Ave.
California State Senator Jackie Speier will welcome the group, then the movie by
producer/director Dan Wiesburd will be screened. An audience discussion will follow with
Lynn E. Ponton, MD, UCSF professor of psychiatry and a leader in the American Academy of
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Ponton, one of the experts featured in the movie, has
written several books on teen-agers and risk taking as well as the sexual behaviors of
adolescents. She will be joined by a few young women who discuss their specific eating
disorders or risky behaviors in the film. Another expert who was interviewed in the film
is Richard G. MacKenzie, MD, World Health Organization leader and past president of the
Society of Adolescent Medicine.
Following the program, the audience will be encouraged to go to an exhibit area which
features resources for dealing with eating disorders and other risky behaviors.
