Hilary Kessler Seligman, MD, MAS
Assistant Professor of Medicine,
University of California, San Francisco
San Francisco General Hospital
Dr. Seligman’s research focuses on food insecurity (the inability to reliably afford safe and nutritious foods) and its influence on the development and management of chronic disease, particularly obesity and diabetes. Through a combination of epidemiologic study and primary data collection, her work evaluates mechanisms such as chronic stress, compensatory behavioral changes, and changes in dietary intake which may predispose food insecure adults to chronic disease. She studies food insecurity both in clinical settings and community-based settings, such as food banks and soup kitchens. She also develops interventions aimed at facilitating shifts in dietary intake in low-income communities toward healthier food alternatives. She is currently working with Dr. Kristine Madsen to develop a literacy-level appropriate healthy living guide targeted towards obese adults and their families. Her work is currently funded both by federal and foundation grants.
