Dr. Tschann’s primary interest is the study of personal relationships and health-related outcomes among children and adolescents, particularly in Latino populations. In previous research, she examined how family relationships influence health risk behaviors, violence and victimization in Mexican American adolescents; and how sexual relationship dynamics are related to condom use in Latino adolescent couples. She is currently funded by NHLBI to investigate parental influences on obesity among Mexican American children. A central focus of the study is on parents’ child-feeding practices that may be linked to weight gain in children. The research will also examine the effects of socioeconomic status and cultural factors on parents’ behaviors. The results will provide vital information for family-focused behavioral interventions targeting obesity among Mexican American children.
